My 17" LCD that I’ve had for the past 3 years, connected to my PC finally went out the other day. I’ve got an old CRT monitor hooked up to my PC and I had to put it to the side of my desk so it would fit. Those things are so HUGE! The iBook is now sitting where the 17" LCD was.

Question by Paul: Will my new laptop be any good at gaming?
So Im planning on ordering a new Dell Studio 17 Laptop and I don’t know a whole lot about computers. I want to know if its going to be good at gaming at all. Its going to have…
-Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T6600 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
-Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
-17.3” HD+ (900p) Bright LED Display with TrueLife™ and Camera
-4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz
-500GB SATA HDD (7200rpm)
-1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650

So yeah. Im not a big gamer but I used to play Guild Wars and Star Wars Galaxies and I was thinking of maybe playing one of those again if this laptop is good enough.

Thanks in advance

For less than half that price, you can get a desktop that will run Crysis (I think the game with the highest graphics out there) at Ultra-Super-High (my friend hacked it to look better, and it runs at 100 FPS). Gaming laptops are too expensive.
To answer your question, it’s a pretty good computer (for a Dell), and will most likely run a lot of games.

Question by Kierra: Should I stick with desktop or get a laptop? How hard it is to adapt to a laptop?
My computer died and I have to chose from a laptop or a desktop. I never used a laptop before, never own one. I am thinking about getting one for the fact that I can browse the web where ever I am in my house and bring it with me if needs be. But I am used to a desktop because I play video games and use photoshop a lot. I am also thinking about getting a 17 inch screen laptop.

Is Nvidia Optimus The Future Of Gaming Laptops?

Copyright (c) 2010 Titus Hoskins

If you’re not into gaming laptops or keeping up with the latest notebook computer technology, Nvidia Optimus might be completely foreign to you. So for the purpose of this article and your own sanity, we will try and keep this discussion as non-technical as possible.

First, Nvidia Optimus refers to a new technology which lets you seamlessly switch graphics components in your laptop in order for you to save power. For instance, you can switch between Integrated Graphics and Discrete Graphics whenever you need them or which one is best suited to handle the application or computing chore at hand. Having switchable graphics simply means you can get enhanced visuals and longer battery life from your laptop.

Now this is not exactly new, we have had switchable graphics before in laptops but what is revolutionary about Optimus – everything is done automatically behind the scenes, without any interruption and the end-user won’t even know a switch has taken place.

In some past systems, the laptop user had to manually switch modes or graphics. Optimus changes that completely, in very simple layman terms, it’s like going from a standard automobile to an automatic one; or rather perhaps a better comparison would be to think of hybrid cars, a driver might not know when the vehicle is running on gas or the battery because everything happens automatically in the background. All you know, the hybrid car takes you smoothly from point A to point B.

What is also so significant about Nvidia’s Optimus is the overall application of this technology, if a laptop or netbook has an Nvidia GPU and a CPU/chipset with an IGP there is no reason why it can’t have Optimus installed. The costs are very low and can be easily absorbed into the cost of the GPU, so you can expect Optimus to appear in ION netbooks, mainstream laptops and especially high-end gaming rigs. About 50 Optimus enabled laptops are coming in the summer of 2010.

Lets face it, for high-performance gaming laptops one of the main problems has been low battery life, if Optimus can increase battery life, it will be a welcomed addition. Nvidia is making some serious claims with this new technology but if only half of what they’re saying comes to fruition, then this is indeed a revolutionary break-through. Just the increase in battery life alone, would make Optimus a big step forward.

Just how does Optimus work?

Perhaps, we will have to get just a little technical. Currently, Optimus will recognize applications based upon the executable file name but it can go a little deeper at recognizing the application or what’s called for in order to get the best performance. For instance, general web surfing usually doesn’t require discrete GPU but if you come across a Flash Video, Optimus will fire up the GPU and route calls thru the video processing engine. End the Flash Video and the GPU can power down again. Likewise, any time you require DirectX (OpenGL), DXVA (DirectX Video Acceleration), or CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) features – Optimus will activate the discrete GPU. If you want a very good and a very detailed technical description of Optimus, I would recommend you read Jarred Walton’s excellent article here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2934/2

However, what you have to remember, Optimus will do all this work seamlessly in the background and you shouldn’t even see as much as a flicker on your laptop screen. Because you’re using the right parts of your laptop system to give you the best performance while using the least amount of power, you will save energy and battery life.

One of the first laptops to use Optimus technology is the ASUS UL50Vf, and it’s very appropriate that one of the first Optimus laptops is coming from ASUS. Since Asustek has been long recognized as a leader in innovative computer products and laptop technology. For example, they launched the popular netbook category with its first Eee PC back in the fall of 2007. In addition, we have the first 3D laptop also coming from ASUS, which is the Asus G51J 3D gaming laptop which features Nvidia’s 3D Vision Technology and one of the first 120Hz LED backlit LCD displays able to handle the twin images required for 3D gaming.

Will Optimus revolutionize gaming laptops?

It is probably in these power-hungry high performance machines that Optimus could play a major role. Providing extra battery life would be a great benefit, especially if the costs of supplying that longer battery life is next to nil. No doubt, once laptop manufacturers and designers get their hands on this new technology, we will see some novel applications and uses, especially where gaming is concerned.

Seamlessly powering up or powering down, depending on the applications being handled could prove very beneficial in a gaming laptop. Automatically switching from Integrated Graphics to Discrete Graphics or GPU can increase the efficiency of your laptop and save energy. Gamers want power when they need it and any technology which can give them this ability will be welcomed with open arms. While no one can predict the future, but if Nvidia Optimus technology can give gamers and gaming laptops seamless switchable graphics and save battery life, then that future looks very bright indeed.

Gaming Laptops – Four Factors To Check Before Buying

Copyright (c) 2009 Titus Hoskins

Gaming laptops are becoming more and more popular with the computer buying public. Once a true gamer wouldn’t dream of buying a laptop for gaming, but now that laptop performances have increased a hundred fold since the first laptops came on the market, even some die-hard gamers are switching over to the other side.

Even so, many gamers still favor Desktop PCs for gaming, mainly because they’re cheaper but mostly because PCs are much easier to upgrade. Notebook computers are not very suitable for upgrading so your system can go out of date very quickly.

Regardless, if you’re in the market for a gaming laptop, there seems to be new systems coming on stream almost daily. So you shouldn’t have a problem finding a laptop that will meet your needs, as long as you keep a few factors in mind.

Here are four major features you should check before buying your gaming laptop:

Graphics Card

Besides buying the most RAM you can afford, you must check your laptop’s GPU (graphics processing unit) since your gaming system will be handling heavy visuals, graphics and 3D video you need a very robust video card that can get the job done. Many recent laptops now sport dual graphics with either SLI technology (NVIDIA) or CrossFire technology (ATI). Regardless, you should check to see if you have at least 512MB of video RAM, many now have 1 Gig of RAM or more. Most gamers go with NVIDIA GeForce 8800M, 9800M and ATI Radeon HD3870 or higher ones as they hit the market.

Some recent laptops now sport 3 GPUs such as the Toshiba Qosimo X305-Q708 which has a couple of GeForce 9800M GTS cards via SLI configuration, plus it also has a GeForce 9400M for quieter operation.

Processor

You need a powerful processor to perform all those applications with ease, we now have dual-core processors in most gaming laptops. Higher end models now sport quad-core processors which will deliver more than enough power to handle most games. You should get at least 2GHz processing speed, and many processors go higher such as the Intel Core2 Extreme X9000 processor which has 2.8GHz. Keep in mind, some systems can be overclocked, such as the Asus W90Vp-X1, at an amazing 3.28GHz.

Display

Another consideration for a gaming laptop is the all important display, native resolution and sound quality. Obviously, you want the best display so check the actual quality of the images on your laptop. Is there any glare? Are the colors brilliant and true? Are the images sharp and clear? Many gamers now go with bigger displays of 17, 18 or even 20 inches and look for a system that gives HD playback. Note if you have 1080p display which will give you true High Definition. Many high end laptops come with WUXGA (Widescreen Ultra eXtended Graphics) 1920×1200 with 16:10 screen aspect ratio.

Sound is also important in gaming so you want the best speakers and sound quality. Many systems are now sporting HD or Blu-ray Drives so this is something to check for if you want superior viewing visuals and sound.

Hard Drive

Since games, videos, music… all take up a lot of space, most gamers go with as large a hard drive as they can afford. At least 200GB of space, and many go for even more up to 1 TB terabyte of space. Solid State Drives are not yet common in gaming laptops but it is something to consider since these can last longer because you have no moving parts like you have in a hard drive. Higher end gaming laptops now have Solid State Drives but cost is still an issue.

Also remember to check the speed of your hard drive, 7200 RPM is faster than a 5400 RPM system. Since top performance is your ultimate goal, getting the fastest hard drive speed is essential. For this reason many gamers go with a SATA hard drive(s) which gives the best performance.

There are a few other things you might want to check out when buying a gaming laptop. One being style and looks; most of the higher end laptops will have plenty of style and pizzazz. If the style and flash of your rig is important to you, than it is something to consider when buying your system. Perhaps, another less shadow and more important issue is warranty. Does your spectacular looking rig have a good warranty should things go south? The more expensive the rig, the more you should check the warranty, even buying an extended warranty for your brand new gaming laptop. Years of happy worry-free gaming should be your ultimate goal.

Question by heythere: left my laptop out in the cold?
I typically leave my laptop out in the cold. However, last night it was really cold (24 degrees) and in the morning I tried to turn it on but it would IMMEDIATELY shut off. On the 4th try, it finally powered up and works perfectly fine now. When I do leave it in my car, it’s zipped up in a protective laptop bag.
the computer is about 2 months old….do you think something bad happened to it or is it fine? It works fine now, but I just want to know if I may have damaged something.
Thanks

Gaming Laptops – Will Solid State Drives Replace Hard Drives?

Recently, in the world of laptops, there seems to be a major push to replace traditional Hard Disk Drives HDDs with the newer and speedier Solid State Drives SSDs. This issue presents a challenging question for future laptop buyers and especially for those considering buying a gaming laptop.

Which data storage system should you go with?

Now, SSDs or Solid State Drives are not new, they have been around since the 70’s but were mainly used in niche applications in the past. Only recently have computer makers been utilizing SSDs for their machines, especially in laptops. Will these flash drives replace one of the last hold-outs of movable parts in data storage – the hard disk drive?

What is a Hard Drive?

Most computer users are familiar with Hard Disk Drives since they are presently found in most computers and laptops. An HHD stores data on rotating magnetic platters which have different speeds, that’s why you often see 5400 rpm abd 7200 rpm associated with Hard Drives. Data is written to and read from these platters by a block of read/write heads, which are controlled by a micro-controller.

Since your information can be stored in different parts on a Hard Drive, the time needed to get and retrieve data can significantly vary. Keep in mind, these devices are movable mechanical parts so they are prone to all the problems associated with moving parts and can sometimes fail, i.e. crash. Most of us have been there, done that!

What is a Solid State Drive?

Now SSD is an entirely different creature from a Hard Disk Drive. Solid State Drives uses a flash memory chip managed by a micro-controller to store its data. The major thing to remember, SSD usually have slow write times but have very quick read times. Since most users read rather than write information, SSDs can be much faster than HDDs.

In addition, SSDs have no moving components so they are more durable and much quieter than traditional HHDs. Plus, you can use less power consumption and there are less problems with vibrations interfering with ongoing operations.

What you have probably already guessed by now, SSDs are perfectly suited for laptops and smaller devices such as netbooks. The growing popularity of these very handy portable machines has pushed SSDs to the forefront of computer technology. Our need for speed has always been insatiable, but so too, has our need to make things smaller and sleeker.

SSDs are better suited for these devices and all major laptop makers such as Dell, Apple, HP, Levono… have all lately begun to deliver laptops with SSDs. Toshiba, which is one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, has also started producing laptops with SSDs. They also invented NAND flash memory, these chips are commonly used in different memory cards such as SmartMedia and CompactFlash. Again, the major advantages being the faster access times, lighter weight, less power consumption, more resistant to impact and much more durability.

Another trend where we see SSDs taking hold is in the netbook market. This is a relatively new trend since the netbook was only launched by Asustek in the fall 2007 with its first Eee PC. Other laptop makers such as Lenovo, MSI, HP, Dell… have all followed along and jumped on this very popular and growing sector of the laptop industry.

The Cost Of SSDs Are Higher

One of the major obstacles to using SSDs has to be cost. SSDs are more expensive than HHDs but prices will eventually fall as production costs decreases. However, for now there is a marked different and many laptop buyers will go with the cheaper HHDs.

Another related issue is the amount of memory SSDs can support. Because of the cost, many of the present day SSDs have comparably low storage amounts in order to keep the overall cost of a device down. However, we are now seeing larger SSDs which support 64 GB, 128 GB and 512 GB of memory. We even have one SSD drive which can store 1 TB (Terabyte) of data produced by PureSilicon.

Another thing to consider, with SSDs you don’t need cache since system caches are usually made to solve hard drive performance problems. This can be a way to save money on future devices since cache is expensive.

The Future of SSDs

The real future of SSDs have to be realized in the growing popularity of ultra-portable devices like netbooks, mini-laptops and the like. The SSD is perfectly suited for these kinds of portable devices and as consumer demand grows stronger, the future of SSDs looks very promising indeed.

Another market for SSDs has to be in gaming laptops, which are ideally suited because gamers use their machines mainly to read rather than write data. Plus, gaming laptops and gamers want the best possible performance at whatever cost; they don’t mind spending the big bucks if they can get top performances in return.

Major gaming specialists such as Alienware, do offer the option of SSDs in many of their laptops and even in some desktop machines. Other gaming laptop makers are following in the same direction. As with any technology there is a lag time before the old is replaced with the new. The traditional hard drives will be around for quite some time yet, but its days may just be numbered.

For the laptop buyer, which type of drive you finally choose will mainly depend on the purpose of your new device. If you’re looking for a quiet, long lasting, speedy netbook that can take more than a few hard knocks, then you should be looking at a SSD equipped machine. If you want a traditional desktop computer or a desktop replacement laptop, then you can save money by going with an HDD equipped device, these have worked perfectly fine for years and will be around for some time in the future. Of course, if you’re into gaming laptops and want a state-of-the-art machine, then a Solid State Drive may be your best option, assuming money is no object.

Question by Woman984: Does the total luggage weight allowed on a plane include additional laptop or purse?
Air Transat allows 10 kg per person checked luggage, and one piece of carry-on luggage, 5kg, and apart from a carry-on bag we are also allowed a laptop computer, purse, and other paraphernalia that you can have in addition to the carry on bag. My question is, is the 5 kg total for just the carry on bag, or is it for the total of everything you’re carrying on?
