No internet! No internet! Aaaargh!

But I’m an IT geek. Before I phone our provider and start to complain, I know that there are a number of tests I can perform to check that it’s not a problem with any of the kit at our end. I’m not going to be fobbed off by a call-centre worker who wants me to reinstall Windows, check that everything works with Internet Explorer (which I never use) or blame our wireless router. When I phone up I want to be certain that the problem is theirs, not mine

So here I am running our laptop through an alternative modem, one cabled directly into the phone line. No wireless, and not using the router. Bypassing even the splitter. The next step after this was to try a different set of DSL cables. I say next step, because by the time I’d set all of this up, and runa few tests, our broadband connection came back up.

So it really was Them, and not Us.

The reason I am squatting in the hallway is that this is the only place in our house where we have a phone-point. Behind the laptop you should just be able to see the router, and the green light on the modem I was using.

Let’s hope this uploads OK, shall we?

A year ago today I was on the road.

Question by milliermartinez: what is the best laptop for a 16 and 17 year old?
I do not know that much about laptops but, my teenagers want to switch from desktops to laptops. They both enjoy myspace and downloading music and pictures to the computer and their mp4 players and cell phones. They also use it for homework. I would like to get something that they can keep for awhile. Your answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Nooooooo! Internet must mot die!

    seen in my contacts

  • Doodman says:

oh man, good thing it got back up and running. It really looks like you’re scrambling to find the problem too ;D

  • Dankjewelske says:

My boyfriend would be proud of you. He works at a helpdesk at a company like that, but at the backoffice, so he gets to fix what the frontoffice screwed up (and he helps all of my friends so they don’t have to call the frontoffice).
On the other hand, I am one of those persons who calls his cellphone to say "The internet is not working." Which always gets me various annoyed remarks and an explanation that The Internet works fine, just our connection to it isn’t. But hey, I’m female!

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

  • LipglossJunkie says:

Love the capitalized Us and Them. They broke teh interwebs! Most service providers have the suckiest support. Total last resort to phone.

  • sef_lopod says:

Is it possible to survive in your family, these days, without the internet? (Probably not from the point of view of any paying work you might have.) More and more school stuff seems to involve computer use now in the UK; and some of that includes internet searches.

  • florriebassingbourn says:

Even the dumbo on the UK tax internet helpline seemed to think that all my problems stemmed from failure to use Internet Explorer.

  • brenmicalamgus says:

You in true IT geek mode – love it!

  • Andrew _ B says:

love the worried expression. I, on the other hand, would be wielding a large weapon and heading towards the ISP’s office ;)

Seen on my Flickr home page. (?)

  • tharrin says:

haha – I hate when mine goes down… and it does more often than I’d like! When I moved in here we had real problems getting it sorted, and there was a fault with my gear and a fault at their end AND a problem with the phoneline!! much fun sorting that out…. glad yours wasn’t down too long :)

  • Kaptain Kobold says:

Thanks everyone. The connection has actually been erratic all evening, so I suspect that there are still issues.

I do like to rule out all possibilities before I phone up. Past experience with internet helplines suggests that the people who answer the phone aren’t that technical, and just have a checklist of things for you to try. I get the impression that sometimes they don’t even know why you should try it. Anyway, I like to be in control when I call, able to tell them exactly what I’ve done to test the connection and confirm that the problem is at their end, not mine. The last time this happened (back in the UK) I ended up shouting a lot :-)

: Yes, we do use it a fair bit for work, and the children use it for school. So when it goes down it’s a bit frustrating. And, of course, it’s my link to all of you lovely people :-)

  • Jacqi B says:

    wonderful expression on your face!
Glad you were able to get connection to share this with us.
Rik also hates phoning people who know less than he does about the computers – you are right, they probably don’t know why they have to ask you to try x or y. If they understood it, they wouldn’t be answering the phones.

  • Mr Vimes says:

Call centres, urgh. Mind you, I remember calling one years ago to talk about a problem with my internet connection – back in the early-mid 90’s. We went through everything, and I was getting frustrated as I couldn’t get the bloody thing to handshake with them. And then I realised I had rung the wrong ISP. Imagine my shame…

  • Molo9000 says:

The only reason that HP Pavilion was so much cheaper than a MacBook Pro is because it is a lot worse.

If you want to compare prices, find similar systems first.

  • blicksflicks says:

@dougdangger If you count all the bundled software on a Mac, the Mac isn’t more expensive than the PC. PCs don’t come bundled with cool, useful apps like in iLife and iWork. I mean, what do you get? Maybe a clock? Microsoft Wordpad? Also, the free anti-viruses out there for the PC are not really effective either. You’re just playing with fire not buying yourself a good, reputable anti-virus for a Windows PC. Macs aren’t more expensive if you consider what you get with one.

  • dougdangger says:

@blicksflicks There are FREE effective anti-virus out there. Windows firewall works fine as long as you set it properly. There are tons of FREE productivity software out there.

In the end she still spent 1/2 of what she would have spent on a mac.

  • blicksflicks says:

Wait a second, Lauren. Now you need some anti-virus for the PC, and you might want to think about a firewall. Also, you’re gonna need some productivity software (much of which comes free on a Mac) to complete your purchase. Well, what do you know? Man, in the end, you could have bought a Mac.

  • gameman445 says:

at 0:14 you see a guy in a brown jacket and at 0:16 you see that same guy and at 0:14 you see a another guy but it is his reflection then you see him again but he walks right into the apple store

  • trainrider110 says:

Hi, I’ve got something for you Lauren and it’s 3 words Get A Mac, I consider my self a loyal Apple costumer and the quality isn’t good and what are you going to do with your dumb PC let, it will get Viruses and with Win Vista and 7 it will get tuns of viruses and BSOD’s and RSOD’s. Get a Mac.

  • ReneAlanisJr says:

She doesn’t go to the Apple store. Take a look at the guy in blue jeans and brown jacket, he’s there when she goes in the Apple store and when she comes out. This here shows how unrealistic this advertisement is.

  • JewlyPuff says:

“I guess im not coll enough to be a mac person.”
    LOL
    mac person = egotistical hipster

  • viniciusk1edge says:

  • MatthewDavidParr says:

  • europeanfox says:

  • petree50 says:

Congrats Lauren, you’ve got a virus

  • THEMAN9851 says:

    @K2ACP yay! apple store

  • hobbit195 says:

the best idea is to go onto http://www.dell.com and you can custom make your laptop to how thay want it it may cost you more but it is worth it

  • kirkchaos says:

Well it all depends on your price limit. If you can i would aim for have a Duel Core with a processor speed or around 2.0 GHz because technology changes very fast. You should get 2GB of ram (to reduce the chance of the computer slowing down over time) Sounds like they would have lots of files and music so get a big hardrive to store all of there music pictures and ect. Brands id trust would be Sony, HP, Toshiba, i personally dont like Dell and Acer’s. I hope this helped :)

  • phillip24fan says:

for a pc dell is very reliable. i like very much. stylish which can be important for teens. if you have more money to spend than macbook is the coolest and fastest by far for starting at $1,100 which is nearly what you spend on new good dell pc. mac also is almost immune to viruses. you hear left and right about a pc being infected and crashing happens everyday. so rare on mac that company that makes macs, apple corp. held contest wins 10,000 dollars and macbook pro if they can infect macbook. only one did it! doing lots of downloading and stuff you dont want a hacker to get into network and access your banking and stuff so mac is expensive, less maintenance, cooler faster safer and WAY WAYWAY WAY more reliable!!! get a macbook white 2.1 GHz and they will love it guaranteed

  • ```~~maRcjiM says:

so many people here complaining about dell lap tops..but i havent tried dell..lol
i have hp which i think its quite good and a macbook!!
but i recommend macbook which is cost a little much but it has good features..

  • boigeniusz94 says:

well if I were YOU, i would buy the Apple MACBOOK. it’s EXTREMELY fast.
    has core 2 due proccessor
    built in wayport access wifi
    exelent graphics card
    awsome key pad
    mac os x leopard
    beautiful display
they are the most advanced computors in the world
    easy to use
    it has AMAZING features.
and it only costs $1,099 or $1499 for the black one

if you want to check it out, go to the macbook apple website page.

    http://www.apple.com/macbook/

and also check out macs latest version, leopard

    http://www.apple.com/macosx/

    p.s. i have one and it’s amazingly awsome! :D

    well i wouldn’t recommend buying on ebay…ect
but, if you o to best buy, they sell them there.
and at best buy, if your have a best buy members card, they will give you 18 months to pay it off.
it’s better than having to pay the whole thing in one day if you buy it at the Apple Store.
    that’s what i did :D
